Tough call.... I really like Amy Studt and Avril Lavignes voices... they're not beautiful but they are gritty and full of emotion. becx

Yep, I go along with Karen Carpenter and Celine Dion. Also like Dido's unusual voice, but not too keen on her latest release.

Eva Cassidy has got a lovely voice. So has Mariah Carey, Christina Aguillara, Katie Melua. I wish I could sing. My voice is the worst ever which is a shame 'cos i'd have made a great popstar lol!!! Jack

Hi Dave, I think Heather had babies and took time out but I'm not sure. I did know Kirsty's Dad was Ewan my husband used to play in a folk group so I know more about folk music than I really want to! I love Roberts Flack's version of The First Time. I usually think that the people who write the songs sing them better than anyone else (eg. Tom Rush - No Regrets) but Roberta made that song hers. Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee a close second in the Jazz world and then that Glorious Moari KIRI Tekanawa in the world.

For me it has to be Kirsty McColl - brilliant singer/songwriter whose life was cut short by an idiot driving a speed boat. Then Dory Previn and Beth Neilson Chapman. I enjoy a lot of women vocalists but the women who write and sing their own stuff impress me more than the others. Gwynne

Seriously as well, I can first remember Karen Carpenters wonderful voice first time round . Listen to her recordings today and remember there was no computerised "pitch adjustment" as now which can make anyone sound okay (well perhaps not the two Hildas) Bob

Janet Baker. Lesley Garrett is OK but not great - very uncomfortable on the high notes. len

My husband would certainly agree with you about Karen Carpenter, and I really like Barbra Streisand. Diane
