Thank goodness for that ! I was beginning to think i had offended someone in some way - last week i got three of these "this is not my relative" replies so i responded as i usually do .( Thank you anyway, good luck in your searches etc.) It quite put me off asking anything ! It only takes a few minutes to reply , and its much more pleasant than the automatic version. Elaine x. :-)

What is the difference between an automated reply and a personal one? And where can I find them? When you get a email from this site you can only hit the reply button because the main email hasnt got a email address.

Perhaps you should add this comment to Joy's list of gripes

Okay, feel better now I've vented. I've sent out many, many enquiries (I'm trying to find a Jones family that lives/lived in Southampton!) and had many, many kind replies! But those curt 'this is not my relative' ones do have a rather bad tone. I can't see any reason why an automated reply message shouldn't be polite! ~ JayBeee

I think the options for automated responses are available if you open the email thats in your private email box (not the one on the site) that tells you someones made contact.

I never even noticed there was an automated reply option! Always answer personally. (BTW Not seen you on here for a while Louise, nice to hear from you.) Christine

which of course never gets acknowledged eh ? I do know that when the new mail system was tested, there were comments that the automated replies were a little on the blunt side...

Neither do I. I prefer to at least take time to send a personal message apologising for not being able to assist. Lou

...when they send an automated reply telling someone the person described in their polite enquiry is not their relative, that the message they are sending is abrupt and rude? JayBeee
