in this area it is much cheaper to rent, a colleague of my partner has just got a morgage for a 1 bedroom flat, and will be repaying £700+ a month. we rent a 2 bedroom flat for £400, and we don't have to pay for repairs, maintance etc

Yes Sue I chose the price for 2 bed lower end of the market, that need a lot of work done to them, some of the 1 bed appartments can be £250,000 and some of the better houses semi's or detatched are more, that is the end of the market I didn't even consider, knowing that they are out of reach, I can't even afford to dream of them. :( Bev

That seems cheap to me here in Surrey. The house next door to me (3/4 bedrooms, semi detached) is for sale at £335,000. To rent a four bed house in this area is about £1500 per month. A 4 bed detached bungalow opposite me has just been sold for £410,000! Langley Vale is cheaper than the Epsom town area because we only have 2-hourly buses which stop at 6.30pm (none on Sundays), 1 small shop, a petrol station and a school! Anyone got a spare £350,000 to come & live next door to me? LOL Sue

I have to rent, because the income isn't enough to buy, but when I went to see the bank for a mortgage I was told I would pay less each month if I was to buy, than what I am paying in rent, but yes you guessed it, I don't earn enough to borrow approx £150,000 as that is how much most houses are here now. :( Bev

In the long run it's got to be more cost effective to buy. However without a large deposit a mortgage leaves most couples without any disposable income each month.

I have lost touch with how much a month it would be to buy your own house, we havent moved for 24 years. A house across from where i live is up for renting when i checked the paper there it was £625 month so is it cheaper to buy or rent these days I feel sorry for any one doing either at that price.
