Felicity I lived in West in USA and all my friends said 'go potty' too! I was a student at the time so it didn't sound too bad from 18 year old girls - but if they still say it now as adults i'm sure it would sound strange!! Joanne

what about 'cludgy' or 'closet' ( not necessarily the coming out of kind) or in Lancashire we had a 'long-drop'

Some men "point Percy at the Porcelain". I rather like toilet...after all, it probably comes from the French "toilette", which I think means to freshen and make oneself pretty, n'est pas?? Dee x

Deborah, My Dad used to say 'going to see a man about a dog' and 'going turn his bike around'!? I call it the loo, lavatory, toilet, ladies or bathroom. Children at school ask if they can 'go for a toilet' I ask them where they will get one from and not to bring it into class! Viv

In the early days in Oz, it was called the "OUT HOUSE" because most toilets/loo's were outside in the backyard. This was upgraded to "DUNNY" or "BOGGER" if ya posh. Tony.

I usually say loo, but also ladies if I am out. Trouble with lavatory is when it is shortened to lav or lavvie.

My dad always used to say "going to see a man about a dog", not about going to the loo but whenever I asked where he was going. Used to get really excited 'cos thought we were going to get a dog - never did though. :( Kxx

Well, us aussies I think mostly refer to it as loo just because we use slang so much and feel comfortable in using it as part of our vocabulary. But Toilet is the more polite word I would say.

Loo usually. Incidentally, is it just my fella or do any others have a habit of disappearing to the loo with a newspaper when the tea is ready, only to emerge 20 minutes later when it has gone stone cold?! Drives me nuts!!
