Please can anyone tell me where you can buy edible coloured rice paper/waffle paper? A few years ago you could buy packets of it in sweet shops. My daughter used to refer to it as eating-cloth because it resembled a thin washing-up cloth. We only need a small amount for students to cut their designs for cake decorating small cakes. We walked the town yesterday searching. We can get white paper. Is it easy to colour without it going soggy?

Try a specialist kitchenware shop or deli.

You can 'paint' white rice paper with food colouring (shiny side down) but it is best to do it when it is actually on the cake(s) - it does go a bit soggy and it's hard to transfer it to the cake otherwise. Bonus is that when soggy it 'moulds' wonderfully to anything underneath (fondant icing etc) to you can get some really good 3D effects and a chance to do shading etc. Cartoon effects with black food colourings pens (drawn before cutting out and putting on cake) and 'filling in' with colour look quite professional without a lot of effort lol I have painted whole sheets and cut out shapes but if you aren't careful it does get a bit distorted. (you have to let them dry out before cutting too) It can also go a bit stiff. Hope this is of help Magsxx

Thank you for all your suggestions. We thought it would be such a quick and easy way to decorate approx. 250 small cakes for a fund raising event. The lecturer has one of those press cutter clipper gadgets that will cut out hearts, Teddies or whatever shape that individual one makes and it would have been a good idea if we could could get the colours...... Still looking, - but we may have to use other ideas. The students are funding the materials so it has to be reasonably priced.

how about making butter icing, put a small blob on each cake, and decorate with a smartie, chocolate button or jellytot. You can change the colour of the icing with food colouring E x

Thank you for the suggestion Rosemary, that was my thought too but we visited the new shop in Canterbury on Wednesday with no luck.- and then scoured the rest of that city's shops. We have found supplies of white, (Tesco) but would love to find the coloured sheets which used to be available.- probably covered by an E.U. directive now!
