Lynn You can access the 1881 census free on the Family History Online site - it presents it differently from familysearch and you can't make your search as specific to start with, but it helps when the LDS site is playing up, which it is quite a lot at the moment. nell

One of the reasons for problems is that in days gone by people were illiterate and couldn't read and write, the recorder wrote names phonetically, also people told the adjudicator they were all born in the place the census was taken, also you will find in a lot of cases people just did not know how old they were. Sometimes you can be fooled by the fact sometimes the name they were commonly called is on the census. eg Betsy for Elizabeth. Try to wild card names or places for speed and a cross section, a wild card is eg barrow* for Barrow in Furness, or J* (surname). it works for me. Do you use the free website Family Search Internet services for your 1881? if not try it.
