All children should be taught history, otherwise we won't know where we came from and loose our identity. We need to know what our forebears did for us. The Uk is rapidly loosing it's identity, don't allow it to disapear altogether. Jo.

i agree with you she! i think children should be taught about their heritage. after all if they were not taught about the past how are they meant to understand what our ancestors went through to make us the people we are today. on the funny side (and you know me) why don't they teach scottish instead of english!!!!! lol lol lol

Isn't it the love of history that has led us all into family research- I hope this won't stop the next generation from being interested. What a stupid idea- they will be stopping maths & English next, after all how 'cool & sexy' are sums?

Hi, I must declare an interest as a drama teacher but there should be room on the curriculum for both. There was when I was at school and there is now in the schools (in England) that I know. Both are important, although my interest in History developed after I left school - it was deadly dull in my school. Too much about Kings and Queens and treaties and not enough social history. The curriculum my son followed for GCSE and A level was much more interesting. Gwynne

Hi She, Long time no speakee. I know that History is (nearly) always written by the winners, but surely we can reflect on how the past was without it adversely affecting the present. We have many lessons to learn from the mistakes of yesteryear. Do they want our Children to have to make all those mistakes again? Jim

The point of history is to learn from others mistakes, culture etc!! What will they learn instead, more Noddy subjects like media studies or political correctness? History was one of the only subjects I liked at school. Jacquie

This is Terrible!! I am from Glasgow and am proud of my heritage! Due to the fact that my Dad was in the forces and we moved around a lot, I recieved very little education in Scotland. I was gutted because I was only taught English History but my family knew I liked to read so they bought me lots of books on Scottish history which I loved.. and I was only a child. My Better half was born in Stirling and the only lesson he ever liked at school was History. He has been able to teach me so much more than I ever read in the books and its all because of those history lessons he had! I cant believe that they are really going to stop teaching it.. Its disgusting!! Shaz x

I just wanted to add : I work as an Education Guide for the National Trust here in Northern Ireland working under the guidelines of our education boards . The children come various schools and various teaching programmes are put in place ( these happen in wales, Scotland and England ) within the choosen stately homes the trust owns . At present the children will learn about Victorian Christmas and in the New Year it's World War II evacuee....the children love these programmes. My son was a WWII evacuee last year - they had to dress up from home, had a gas mask box ( made out of an aeriel box covered in brown paper) he was throughly enthused about the way they lived ........... collected info from our older family members about their account od WWII. It would be such a shame for the scots to loose out on HISTORY :(((

I'm appalled She!! History has a way of shaping us and our society. Each nation has a way of telling their side and differs . For Instance I learnt the english side of the battle of 1066 , my daughter learnt the Irish side ( we have been living in N.Ireland for 4 years ) which included more info on John De Courcy - It was fascinating!! My mother is from Livingstone Scotland - it's her mothers side that are Scots............. I say wise up Scotland and take your finger outta your bum and make the lessons INTERESTING!! History isn't UNCOOL history can be at secondary level BORING............England & Ireland can bring it alive so can YOU!! Loose your history then you are gonna loose your IDENTITY!!

Hi She, Congratulations!! How about sharing your newspaper articles with the rest of us.? As your fellow researchers we also want to share your limelight! History is what we are all about and I just could not imagine what the future would be for generations to come. Without having had their lives enriched with history. It is shocking to say the least! How very sad! ((Hugs)) Lindy

not much english history was taught at school in scotland - but I was lucky I had a brilliant enthusiastic teacher and they made it come alive

none at all louise - they are suggesting drama classes as it would give the pupils more life skills! I for one am totally appalled. I am here in Yorkshire but after the Beeb rang me I contacted my old school - its so sad isnt it. I have always had a passion for the subject and because of the fact that Mary Queen of Scots and I were born in the same town and my husbands great uncle x 9 signed her death warrant there has been a lot of coverage this week - we cant lose our heritage no matter what country we belong to

They deem it 'uncool and not sexy enough' to quote the Scotsman newspaper today. Since my love of history and research has been in several newspapers (in Scotland this week) BBC Radio Scotland phoned to ask if I would take part in an interview live on Monday morning at 9.30. They want to know what I think about the loss of these classes - my comment so far ??? We need to remember our heritage - all our heritages as we live in a multi-cultural society - what are your views on this ?? She
