I had been meaning to go for weeks. I would advise anyone if they get the opportunity to go and talk to the church wardens as they seem really pleased to help. If my husband had not got chatting I would have gone away empty handed. I am going to go back and clean up the gravestone soon. Shirley

This morning I persuaded my husband to drive to Teston where his ancestors once lived. Whilst I was I searching amongst the gravestones for the relevant names he spoke to the church warden who had a map of the churchyard. There was the gravestone of his ancestors. It was barely readable. Then another lady appeared along with her 92 year old father. They had lived in the village all their lives. In the 60's she had made a copy of all the insriptions on the graves and she is going to look them up and send me the inscription from their gravestone. Her father actually remembered Alf Russell, and told me where he had moved to. When I got home I checked them out in 1871 census and our ancestors were next door neighbours.
