A train carrying schoolchildren has crashed into a level crossing. The two-carriage service struck the gates of a manned crossing at Rowston, near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, around 8.30, injuring one passenger. The incident involved the 8.04am Lincoln Central to Peterborough service operated by Central Trains. Paramedics confirmed that one person was airlifted to Lincoln County Hospital, but said no other passengers required treatment. "We believe that the passenger had only minor injuries. It was very lucky that no-one else was hurt," said a Lincolnshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman. She went on: "Ambulance crews didn't treat anyone else at the scene, not even for cuts and bruises." Network Rail said the crossing has wooden-hinged gates that the crossing keeper moves when trains are coming. "The train was not derailed and remains on the track," said a spokeswoman. "We have engineers and investigators on their way to the scene." The accident was nine days after the automatic-barriers tragedy near Reading in Berkshire which claimed seven lives. Central Trains said there had been about 80 passengers on board, including children believed to be going to school in Sleaford. The train travelling on a local line which runs parallel with the East Coast Main Line. The crossing controls a rural road which runs east out of Rowston towards Rowston Farm.

That could have been a nightmare! Thank goodness no-one was badly hurt as they could have been. The poor parents will worry every day now. I worry all the time about my daughter who travels daily to London from Winchester by train. Ann Glos
