After many problems and numerous tests and scans, after the amniocentesis, I asked to be told as I had been told all the bad things so needed something good! I was delighted and it was lovely to talk about the baby by name. Have had one surprise and one known baby and each was great in it's own way. Jacky

When I was pregnant with all of mine,we could not know the sex of the child before birth, but it never occurred to me that I would have a girl.Every time I was pregnant i just knew it was boys.Never even chose girls names. Rose

Hi Cherie, my youngest was born on the 10th dec, but was due on the 30th nov, this one is due on the 12th Dec and when I went to the hospital yesterday they said that they would leave me until the 22/23rd Dec!!! nightmare with 3 such young ones, i hope it doesn't go so far. Liz

I asked at the scan if they could tell- basically I did not like the idea that the person doing the scan knew something about my baby that I didn't!!! They always say that it is not 100% though, so there is always that element of surprise possible when its born. I would not buy specific clothes or decorate a room on the strenght of a scan though.

I did with my 4th as I had an amniocentesis so knew I was having a boy. Got two of each, so I didn't mind either way. Christine

Was dying to know and luckily, found out on the last scan. The nurse said' yes, definately a girl'. I said ' are you absolutely positive?' She was, Tamsin had obliged and just had a wee, so no doubts! We had an appointment with the bank manager after the scan, and just sat there smiling like idiots all the way through!. Nice to be able to choose her name before she was born aswell, so we could talk to her , getting her use to her name. Even the midwife was saying 'Come on, Tamsin, out you come!' while I was giving birth, it was so much more personal for me.

I wanted to know but the hospital policy was not to tell. I really wanted a boy and got a girl, but once I held her I loved her instantly and didn't care that she was a girl. She's 7 now and so lovely. I wouldn't swap her for the world. Jack x

My Two older sisters and myself have had Two children each. None of us knew the sex before. Now my younger sister is pregnant for the first time due in February, and she wanted to know, My mum and Dad and myself didnt want to know what it was, so when she went for her scan she sent a text message saying everything was fine. I phoned her and she said it was hard not writing what it was in the text. Anyway she carried on to tell me that they couldnt find it as he was laying the wrong way, but then later on he turned round, at the end of the conversation she hadnt realised that she had said he, and she done the same to my Mum and Dad. So now we know it's a boy and his name is Owen, that has spoiled everything for me I call him Owen now and feel as though he has been born already.

Partner didn't want to know with either of mine so we didn't ask the first time. Just 'knew' I was having a girl though. Had lots of problems with the second and ended up having loads of scans so partner stopped coming with me. So I took the opportunity to ask. Like Jacky says when you're just getting bad news it's nice to have something positive to focus on. I've now got two lovely girls. Jeanette x
