I like clean sport - so no mud or strawberry jam. Maybe just a smidgen of baby oil to make it more fun. Len

Len it seems Clement has a point after tonight's display. Grampa Jim has a point after Wayne Rooney's display he is a disgrace and I thought he would do Great things for the side but tonight he has proved he is a thug, maybe he should have taken up Rugby if that's acceptable behaviour, but I don't think Rugby players are thugs, but as Sue in Kent says how disgraceful can you get and to treat the memory of the great Emyln HUGHES like that, Emlyn was a brilliant England/ Liverpool Player how dare he use the black armband to show his childish tandrum and then to sit drinking beer (I didnt see that bit) he would suit the Spanish supporters I think. It is a pity the game could not be stopped and officials due something, but I think if the English players had walked off they would have been in worse trouble with the F.A. And I thought it was only the Eastern Europeans that carried on with all that Racist stuff, how wrong can you be. What a Shame on the great game. Pat x

What about the disgraceful behaviour of Rooney? If he wnts to play grown-up football he should start behaving, His age cant be held as an excuse for his childishness, I know plenty of 19year olds who would be proud and honoured to represent their country in this way I heard one report of how he looks like becoming another Gascgoine,

Thanks everyone for completely ignoring my point, seems you all care more about the petulance of a 19yr old (of which I totally agree) than the appalling abuse from the crowd.

I read that Rooney is sponsored by Powerade (a "sports drink" I assume). I suspect he was drinking that.

I was totally shocked at the racial abuse from the "fans". It was unbelievable. :-( Joy

Mags Report 18 Nov 2004 11:06

Hi Paul, I think any form of racial abuse is abhorrent. Last night's display was appalling. The players had no option but to try to ignore it. They certainly couldn't walk away from it and I've no doubt that it affected England's game. FIFA should rule the game void - or award it to England - that would show the racists that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated. Sorry if I'm being too simplistic. Magsx

Well the game was a friendly (hahahaha) so not sure what that would achieve

Mags

Mags Report 18 Nov 2004 11:09

Not a lot now Paul! but if they set a precedent that could be followed for future games that DO matter it might! Magsx

Spain should be banned from hosting any more international games for the next year. See if the loss in revenue makes the Spanish authorities control their fans. See if the fans enjoy not being able to view live football! Racism is disgusting and should not be tolerated. (as for rooney, going to be a bit controversial here and say that yes throwing the black band on the floor was disrepsectful and some of his challenges were rough but he played with more passion than any of the other players!)

Unknown Report 18 Nov 2004 11:46

Not contraversial as far as I'm concerned, in a way I agree - the overall team performance was dire. The manager was correct to remove him though, he'd lost it a bit. As for the disrespect of taking the arm band off - I'm sure he didn't think through the significance of that, he was just showing his frustration.

It was disgraceful. FIFA need to come down hard though probably wont - England are forever being threatened with being thrown out of tournaments because of the behaviour of a minority of so called fans. Other countries have had equally bad or worse holigan problem at their domestic matches (and some internationals) and not a word uttered. Rooney may have played with passion but still acted like an idiot (Emilyn Hughes, the reason he was wearing the arm band - always played with 100% passion and commitment - maybe Rooney should watch some old clips and hang his head in shame) and wont be long before he gets sent off whilst wearing an England shirt. How about praise for the black players who (as with too many times in the past) handled themselves with dignity whilst listening to all that vile abuse. Shaun Wright-Phillips is a youngster himself at only 23. Kxx

Bec Report 18 Nov 2004 11:52

I agree with you Paul. Everyone has an opinion of Rooney (mostly negative) but I do not believe he threw the armband on the floor to deliberately disrespect Emelyn Hughes and his grieving family. I truly believe he was sick of the pathetic Spaniards throwing themselves on the floor at every opportunity and the disgusting chanting of the Spanish fans. He's only 19 and still learning (in life and in football). Give the boy a break!

Unknown Report 18 Nov 2004 11:53

Yep, Ashley Cole handled himself very well when kicking the Spaniards up in the air and pushing their assistant manager lol You're correct by the way, Wright Phillips was very composed

♥ Katz Report 18 Nov 2004 11:58

Oooopps, didn't see it all, missed that bit...... sorry. Still think FIFA must really crack down, had that been the other way round, England fans doing it, FIFA would already be threatening exclusion from the next World Cup. Kxx

Bec

Bec Report 18 Nov 2004 11:58

Ashley Cole was one of the poorest england players on the pitch. The boyf (Arsenal fan) reckons he's still recovering from the injury but it looked more like laziness to me, plus if he wasn't fit he should have told Ericksson not to play him. (remember the team manage ericksson and not the other way around!)

I was appalled and I so hope the FA deal with this appropriately!!

In fairness they were all pretty poor, I don't think anyone came out of it with much credit (that Joaquim (or however you spell it) looked useful though !)
