Kinda. 4 years ago I started with a new firm and they gave me tools that were totally inadequate. 3weeks later the same tools caused me to slip two discs, one of which presses on a nerve in my spine, and still sometimes stops me from walking if I'm not careful. For all this I ended up with £2500. Not a lot considering I can no longer do heavy lifting, play rugby, judo, boxing or any of the other sports that I love, and at the then age of 25 I don't think it's right. Anything that makes the workplace safer, and makes employers take notice of issues of safety definitely gets my vote!

craig i think in your case it was justified.it has effect your physical health.i feel this can go two ways the people that claim with virtually anything .and people that have genuinly injured themselves where compansation is justified then they will have a very hard time claiming from companies because of unnessecary claimsxxxxx(:

Yes it has gone too far. Fine in the likes of Craig's case because it's justified but people just go after money for the simplest of things - just to make money. We'll soon be as bad as America (not far from that now). That contestant on Gordon Ramsays Hells Kitchen that had a spat and fell/pushed over got paid off with $68,000 - ridiculous. Kxx

Many claims are fatuous and should be kicked out of court. Physical injury deserves compensation if there is proveable fault. On the other hand six figure sums for libel or defamation are ridiculous, hurt feelings or loss of reputation can never be worth that much, often the publicity surrounding the case is actually worth as much as the compensation. Plus the newspaper fees!

My dad fell on an uneven paving stone two weeks before my wedding in 1998. He was in hospital a week, and on crutches for about three weeks afterwards, he had to 'hobble' me up the aisle on his crutches. He also could not stay for the evening 'do' as he was in too much pain by that time, so ended up leaving early the reception that he had paid for. When he contacted the council they passed the buck, it took ages, eventually he got £1000. Six years later the paving stone he fell on is still uneven- the council has not fixed it. He hoped that after he contacted them they would at least do something about it. Maybe it is cheaper for them to dole out cash than actually make the pavements safe.

What gets my goat is when people sue YEARS after the alleged event has occurs! It's almost like they were ok with it, but someone has recently talked them into suing. And quite often these type of cases seem to involve someone famous. Wasn't it worth pursuing when they weren't so famous? Money grabbing, pure and simple!
