Just picked my son up after a school football match, and he has cut his tounge quite badly it won't stop bleeding, at the moment he is sucking an ice cube, any other ideas?

I don't know Baz, it just seemed like a good idea at the time, I'm not very good at first aid, poor kid having a mother like me!!

Sue have you tried phoning your local surgery? the Nurse may be able to help - or NHS direct. I know the tongue does heal quickly - it is probably not as bad as it looks tho, so try not to worry too much .

Hi Anne it seems to be stopping now, but if it starts up again, I will phone A&E.

Immediate care: Push the part of the tongue that's bleeding against the cheek or the roof of the mouth.
