Len of the Chilterns

Len of the Chilterns Report 19 Nov 2004 23:04

In the British Navy and the days of wooden fighting ships and muzzle-loading cannon, the cannon balls were stacked near the guns on brass trays that had rounded indentations into which the cannon balls fitted exactly (otherwise they would be rolling around the deck). The trays were made of brass and were referred to as monkeys. When the ships ventured up into arctic regions, the brass monkeys contracted at a faster rate than the iron cannon balls and the latter no longer fitted. Hence the saying "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey". The saying applies up here in the Chilterns tonight..... too cold even for wooden sailing ships Len
