In a previous existence - well, before I was married - an Italian boyfriend used to ask what is this verb I got ?! And I wish "they" would know the difference between complimentary and complementary. :) Joy

When I was young we were taught you did not start sentences with but or and. Look at the newspapers today and what do they start with.

Spelling is not that important but syntax, grammar and punctuation errors can alter the whole meaning of a written message. len

Hi, On the same theme as Hal. "He turned round and said...." "So I turned round and said............... " "Then he turned round and said" Who are these people who constantly rotate while having conversations? Gwynne

Oh I cringe at so many mistakes, and I don't even live in Gt Britain. For example on "Ready, Steady, Cook" they constantly say "a bit of water" instead of "a drop of water". With all these advertising slogans is it not surprising that children of today do not know how to spell! I can remember my English teacher telling me to try, if possible, to avoid the word "got". "I have" sounds much nicer, doesn't it? Sylvia xxx

I was talking to a friend recently, and he was describing a conversation he had with other friends,it went thus, I went then she went and then he went again,When I asked him Where they all went to, He just gaped in astonishment, I assumed he must have meant what they were talking about. Hal.

Yes, Registry office wants me want to shout no no no it's Register office, divvy!!! And the paragrah business too, that is soooooooo annoying - that's why, if I start a "thread", then I put something in the title, then put the rest in a reply so then I can put paragraphs there. And the weather forecasters so irritate me when they say there wil be more in the way of sun, or more in the way of cloud - for heaven's sake, which do they mean?!!! There, I feel better now! :) Back to grammar - should of instead of should have, and other things mentioned previously. I love writing and reading. I love English grammar. Joy

I don't mind bad spelling and grammar too much as mine is far from perfect, but what I really hate to see is American English words such as z instead of s etc, and missing out the u. eg specialize and color Oh and I have the way that GR takes out all your paragraphs if yours is the first message of the thread!

Text "language" is awful! A corruption of the language. Children write it in some school work I've seen and some adults use it in emails and message boards. Laziness!!

It makes me cringe when people don't pronounce the letter T in the middle of words. Compu_er instead of computer . . . thir_y, four_y instead of thirty and fourty . . . See Ya la_er etc. You even hear this kind of talk on the television.

That's true. Expression is important, but how can you be understood if you can't communicate correctly!
