I recently bought a small book called "Criminal Islington" as I have rellies from the area, and it seemed like a useful slice of social history. It was excellent, but I was disappointed there wasn't much detail about Holloway where my rellies lived. However I found an old map which clearly showed where my husband's great-grandmother was born. He was surprised to find that it was in the centre of a "rookery" a place overcrowded with thieves, drunks and prostitutes, and that only 10 years after his gt gran's birth, it was demolished. When I said it had been replaced with social housing from the Peabody Trust he got his A-Z out. A few years ago he worked near Old Street, and had walked passed the Peabody estate regularly, with no idea that his gt gran had lived on that site! nell
