Pat, talking of wood - hubby bought some recently - 2" by 2" but the lengths were in metres!! Is there any wonder we're confused?

"Oh, and have you ever tried to put on a so called MEDIUM sized pair of Taiwanese jockey shorts? Brings tears to the eyes just imagining." MEDIUM just refers to the waist size Jim!

I'm with you there Jim. I wanted some wood a few weeks ago and it was all in Metres. I told the sales person I wanted so many feet and inches and he didn't know how to convert it , so I left the shop. Still haven't got it... Pat

AGREED! AGREED! I tried to conform - honest! Ended up with enough ham from the deli to feed an army. Too embrarrassed to say I'd got it wrong! lol Magsx

Isn't it strange that when babies are born, - even to members of the government, we are told the weight in pounds and ounces. See, they know that makes sense.

In our Sainsbury's they don't flinch when I ask for a quarter of cheese or something on the deli counter, just measure out the equivalent in metric without saying anything. Ann glos

most people do ask for thing in 1/4 or 1/2pound. we have a butchers shop and when someone comes in asking for a kilo we usually know its weights and measures doing their checks

I totally agree, can't get my head round all these metric measurements at all - and my children can't get their heads round imperial haha. The road signs already exist in my part of the world but its only us Brits who look at them "Keep to the Left" in 3 different languages. We're already on the left it's the other **** that are not.

Well said Jim. I think most people know my views on this foreign measurement stuff. I'm English and will always use English measurements no matter how they sell things.

Now that you are in Europe I'll tell you what I want. I want to buy 6 feet of 4 by 2, a 4" drain pipe, a quarter of jelly babies, half a pound of butter, a pound of jam not 454gms, 2 pounds of sugar, not 2 kilos. And a pound of grapes. I grew up with these measurements and have not expressed any wish to have them arbitrarily banned. The least you can do is let us continue to use them alongside your forcefully imported metric measurements until my generation is pushing up daisies. What is coming next? Road signs in English and German? Or and Greek? GIVE ME BACK SIZES I CAN RECOGNISE!!! Oh, and have you ever tried to put on a so called MEDIUM sized pair of Taiwanese jockey shorts? Brings tears to the eyes just imagining.
