During the war you couldn't get a banana...so I'm told. When I was a teenager and used to babysit, I remember being narked when the boy I babysat asked whether something I'd done had happened before or after the War. I told my mum about this indignantly, and she said I should be grateful he didn't specify which war!! nell

It's been said that the modern woman works harder....cos we do the washing all week...In those days...wash on a Mon...Iron on a Tues....done n dusted

And the sheets would be so hot from the good boiling they'd had you'd need to pick them up with those wooden tongs

My sister and I would argue as to who would feed the mangle and who would wind the handle. It was always done on a Monday and we had to do it outside....whatever the weather.

What about the washboard in the sink and carbolic soap and the mangle - ours was in the garden outside the back door.

Hi Bryan, Although I was born after the war,what about the old tin baths,in front of the fire,oooh heaven,warm jammies by the fire for when you got out. Remember my mum always leaving the front door open,and a neighbour always popping in to borrow either a cup of sugar,or jam. Im sure many others will remember the tin baths,we later upgraded to a bungalow bath,in the outhouse,and my mum having to boil the copper for hot water. What a laugh. trish.

We had to share our outside loo with another family. We diddnt have a fridge but put the milk in a bucket of water. We also had a small wooden box nailed on the wall outside with the butter and ....remember Lard???? yuk.....Bathtime was once a week in the galvenised bath. We had a water butt outside to catch the rain water...my job was to sieve the gnats of it so we could rinse our hair....NO need for conditioners then! Squeaky clean everytime....Remember Lino? no carpets then.....God! I could go on forever.....just call me Uncle Albert lol

I was conceived...

only fools and horses,uncle albert,would start to say...during the war...and everyone would cringe. but ive just realised,quite a few of us,including me,have done an uncle albert,by dipping back in our memories about outside loos........any other memories??? bryan.
