Need to open a bank account one of these days. So many to choose from I'm confused. Which one does you son/daughter use so I can go and take a look and see how it will affect me. Thanks.

My son had a Smart account with the Nationwide and now he's turned 18 they've changed it to a Flex account. He does quite a bit on the internet and is happy with the service. Carolyn

My 3 Grandchildren have had accounts (not sure which bank) opened via their school since the age of 12/13, I think they get banking facilities in school or used to. They all have bank cards so can draw money vis the hole in the wall. It has certainly taught them to manage their money. I think it might be abbey Ann Glos

Student accounts are usually far more generous than ordinary current accounts, so if you're about to toddle off to university, go for one of these. Although it's handy to have a branch on or near your campus, thanks to telephone and internet banking, it's no longer a necessity (so long as there's at least one local cashpoint you can use). Look for an account with no or low interest on overdrafts (0% on the first £1,000 is fairly common for year one), plus free banking and low cost student loans. Watch out for the gimmicks and inducements for new customers and focus instead on what counts: the interest rates and borrowing limits. I copied this from my favourite financial advisor
