Us chaps have really felt sorry for poor old Steve; all his hard work over the past two or three months has paid off, now perhaps she'll leave him alone at night, and in the morning, and at lunchtime, teatime, anyoldtime.....he's been looking decidedly (how can I put it politely?- with mixed readers), jaded.
