Away in a manger, No crib for His bed The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head The stars in the bright sky Looked down where He lay The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay The cattle are lowing The poor Baby wakes But little Lord Jesus No crying He makes I love Thee, Lord Jesus Look down from the sky And stay by my side, 'Til morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever And love me I pray Bless all the dear children In Thy tender care And take us to heaven To live with Thee there

Fair is the sunshine Fairer still the moonlight And all that weakling, starry pose Oh Jesus (Oh, my Jesus shines brighter) (Oh, my Jesus shines purer) Than all the angels Heaven can bolt out Beautiful Saviour, Lord of the nations Son of God and Son of Man Glory and honor Praise, adoration Now and forevermore be thine Glory and honour, praise, adoration Now and forevermore be thine

Unto Us A Boy Is Born , King of all creation: Cradled in a stall was He, The Lord of every nation, The Lord of every nation. Cradled in a stall was he With sleepy cows and asses; But the very beasts could see That He all men surpasses. Herod then with fear was filled: 'A prince', he said, 'In Jewry!' All little boys be killed At Bethl'em in his fury. Now may Mary's Son, who came So long ago to love us, Lead us all with hearts aflame Unto the joys above us. Omega and Alpha He! Let the organ thunder, While the choir with peals of glee Doth rend the air asunder.

The angel Gabriel from heaven came His wings as drifted snow His eyes as flame "All hail" said he "thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favoured lady," Gloria! "For known a blessed mother thou shalt be, All generations laud and honor thee, Thy son shall be emanuel, By seers foretold Most highly favoured lady," Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head "To me be as it pleaseth God," she said, "My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name." Most highly favoured lady Gloria! Of her Emanuel, the Christ was born In Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn And everyone throughout the world forever saved Most highly favoured lady Gloria!

Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord And where there's doubt, true faith in you. Chorus: Oh, Master grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled as to console To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope Where there is darkness, only light And where there's sadness, ever joy. Chorus: Make me a channel of your peace It is in pardoning that we are pardoned In giving to all men that we receive And in dying that we're born to eternal life. Chorus

Singing on Armistice Day / Remembrance Sunday, this I find so very moving. Joy ................................................... O valiant hearts who to your glory came through dust of conflict and through battle flame; tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved, your memory hallowed in the land you loved. Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war as who had heard God's message from afar; all you had hoped for, all you had, you gave, to save mankind - yourselves you scorned to save. Splendid you passed, the great surrender made; into the light that nevermore shall fade; deep your contentment in that blest abode, who wait the last clear trumpet-call of God. Long years ago, as earth lay dark and still, rose a loud cry upon a lonely hill, while in the frailty of our human clay, Christ, our Redeemer, passed the self-same way. Still stands his Cross from that dread hour to this, like some bright star above the dark abyss; still, through the veil, the Victor's pitying eyes look down to bless our lesser Calvaries. These were his servants, in his steps they trod, following through death the martyred Son of God: Victor, he rose; victorious too shall rise they who have drunk his cup of sacrifice. O risen Lord, O Shepherd of our dead, whose cross has bought them and whose staff has led, in glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land commits her children to thy gracious hand. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Words: John Stanhope Arkwright, 1919

I'm gonna send thee three by three, 'cause Three was the Hebrew children, and Two was a Paul and Silas, and One was the little itty Baby, Born, born Lord, Born, in Bethlehem. Calypso Carol See him alying on a bed of straw; Draught stable with an open door, Mary cradling the babe she bore; The Prince of Glory is His name. Refrain Oh, now carry me to Bethlehem To see the Lord appear to men; Just as poor as was the stable then, The Prince of Glory when He came. Star of silver sweep across the skies, Show where Jesus in the manger lies. Shepherds swiftly from your stupor rise To see the Saviour of the world. Mine are riches from thy poverty, From thine innocence, eternity; Mine, forgiveness by thy death for me, Child of sorrow for my joy. Angels, sing again the song you sang, Bring Gods glory to the heart of man; Sing the Bethlehem's little baby can Be salvation to the soul.

And another. Joy ....................................................................... "Joseph dearest, Joseph mine, Help me cradle the child divine; God reward thee and All that's thine In paradise," So prays the mother Mary. Chorus He came among us at Christmastide, At Christmastide, in Bethlehem; Men shall bring Him from far and wide Love's diadem: Jesus, Jesus, Lo, He comes, and loves, and saves, and frees us! "Gladly, dear one, lady mine, Help I cradle this child of thine; God's own light on us both shall shine In paradise, As prays the mother Mary." Chorus Peace to all that have goodwill! God, who heaven and earth doth fill, Comes to turn us away from ill, And lies so still Within the crib of Mary. Chorus All shall come and bow the knee, Wise and happy their souls shall be. Loving such a divinity As all may see In Jesus, Son of Mary. Chorus Now is born Emmanual, Prophesied once by Ezekiel, Promised Mary by Gabriel, Ah, who can tell Thy praises, Son of Mary. Chorus Thou my lazy heart hast stirred, Thou, the Father’s eternal Word, Greater than aught that ear has heard, Thou tiny bird Of love, thou Son of Mary. Chorus Sweet and lovely little one, Thou princely, beautiful, God’s own Son, Without thee all of us were undone; Our love is Won By thing, O Son of Mary. Chorus Little man, and God indeed, Little and poor, thou art all we need; We will follow where thou dost lead, And we will heed Our brother, born of Mary. Chorus

Another of my favourites. Joy ................................ See amid the winter's snow, Born for us on earth below, See the tender Lamb appears, Promised from eternal years. Chorus Hail, thou ever-blessed morn! Hail, redemption's happy dawn! Sing through all Jerusalem, Christ is born in Bethlehem. Lo, within a manger lies He who built the starry skies; He who throned in height sublime Sits amid the cherubim. Chorus Say, ye holy shepherds, say What your joyful news today; Wherefore have ye left your sheep On the lonely mountain steep? Chorus "As we watched at dead of night, Lo, we saw a wondrous light; [1] Angels singing peace on earth Told us of the Saviour's birth". Chorus Sacred infant, all divine, What a tender love was thine, Thus to come from highest bliss Down to such a world as this. Chorus Teach, O teach us , Holy Child, By Thy Face so meek and mild, Teach us to resemble Thee, In Thy Sweet humility! Chorus

Many thanks, everyone, for all your contributions. I think we have a massed choir in formation here! Keep 'em coming in anyway! Your preferences bring back many memories for me too. Three Kings as a solo sung wonderfully by a master at boarding school, Christmas midnight communion in years past in St Paul's Cathedral and later in Bath Abbey. My daughter at secondary school singing the solo part in Gaudete. Lots of the well-known carols still bring a tingle to my spine! Christmas as a child began for me after lunch on Christmas Eve, when my father was pulling the sinews out of the turkey before cooking, and we used to listen to the Festival of Lessons & Carols from King's, Cambridge. Very important to us when we had relatives in far flung corners of the world listening at the same time as us on the BBC World Service. When my parents lived in Herefordshire during the war, the parishioners used to walk down to the local POW camp after Christmas communion and sing Silent Night through the wire to the prisoners. They used to join in, with the locals singing in English, and the POWs in German. Quite simply, despite our various ages, it's all still magic ! Philip

Favourite carol is probably Away in a Manger, sung by young children. I also love Adeste Fideles - O Come All Ye Faithful - particularly when sung in an old church when the rafters ring! St Martins or Christ Church in Epsom are good for this! We used to sing it in Latin at school. I have my CD of carols sung by Kings College choir Cambridge playing now! Sue xx
