Sue In Yorkshire. Report 10 Dec 2004 20:47

My daughter and grandaughter (aged 2)were on a bus after doing some shopping in Leeds.Normally my grandaughter is in her buggy onthe bus.but my daughter had the buggy filled with shopping so she sat her daughter on her knee. They had been on the bus at least 10 minutes when the driver slammed on his brakes and did an emergency stop to avoid hitting another vehicle. My grandaughter was thrown to the other side of the bus banging her head in 2 places. My daughter tried to catch her before she hit her head and now she has been told that she has got torn muscles in her neck, shoulder, arm and all down her side. The buggy went flying against the windscreen,if my grandaughter had been in the buggy god knows what injuries she would have had. The driver wouldn't even phone for an ambulance said he would drive the bus til he got to her stop and drop her off. He told my daughter that if she thought she needed an ambulance she could phone one from home. He was not bothered about if they had been injured only bothered about the buggy and how much it would cost to get it repaired. Well she is going to see a solicitor on Monday for Compensation for the injuries that they both sustained and for the stress that they have both gone through and of course the cost of a new buggy. How scary must that have been. Where there any really serious injuries? I know alot of elderly use the day time buses and I'm sure that they would not have been as quick to react as your daughter. Hope they get over the shock soon, as both of them must be quite shaken.

My sister in law suffered a whiplash type injury on a bus when it did a similar thing and she ended up with about £1500. Definately go for it. You have a lot more with the drivers attitude etc. Hope they will be ok. We were hit by a lorry coming home from holiday on the M25 last year. My son got a whiplash injury as it hit the side he was sitting three times before it pulled away. He was really shocked too and didn't want to go on the M25 anymore. So you have to take all that into account too. His compensation is just being sorted. He was lucky in that the injury wasn't too bad. He suffered with an ache in his neck for along time after whenever he was at school working with his head tilted over at his desk. He's fine now although he will still make a comment if he realises we are going onto a motorway. Diane

How disgusting. Poor baby, I hope she is OK. Your daughter must play hell and complain, that driver needs a warning/suspension etc. One day someone could die because of actions like that. Best wishes to your Grand daughter. Jacquie

hi susan - what you have said does not surprise me . i travel by bus to and from work every day. the majority of drivers are 'grumpy old men '. but yesterday i went to manchester to meet a few members from gc- and the train staff where friendly, helpfull and polite ! all work for the same company ! so why the difference ? sue.

hi sue, hope your daughter, and little one,are okay...the driver acted in a irresponsible manner, and should be ashamed.....i work in central london, and i get called to an incident on a bus,at least once a week......the driver calls for help, and we are there within minutes, sometimes so quickly, that the passengers can remain on the bus. good luck with the solicitor, and as suggested, make an official complaint about the driver. bryan.

Thanks everybody that posted. Grandaughter was showing me where she had got hurt, I had to give her bruises a magic kiss to make them go away. Daughter is going to solicitors 9am on Monday. Thanks once again for your concern Sue

Sue, I'm really sorry, only just read this thread. What a frightening experience for your daughter and granddaughter, and how churlish of the driver not to ring for an ambulance! Wishing them both a speedy recovery - physically and mentally - and good luck with the complaint. Love and hugs, Mandy :)
