Robins and blackbirds (they are distantly related) are both partial to worms. Worms come to the surface at night so both these birds tend to be active after dark and before dawn. Their night vision is better than most birds. Go out with a torch on a mild, damp night and inspect a lawn. You will be surprised at the number of worms on the surface, although they will detect your footfall as you approach and dive underground if you get close. Slugs and snails also graze lawns at night and attract hedgehogs. I was amazed to see a hedgehog hunting in my garden a couple of weeks ago when it was really cold. Len

We have a robbin all year round too. last spring they had a nest in the garden and raised just one little chick which was like a ball of fluff. Very cute and quite tame. We kept the cat in for two weeks until it could fly properly. Ann Glos

When they were young children, my friend told my 3 that a robin was a special friend of Santa and sometimes visited our garden to check that they were well behaved and looking after their toys before Santa visited again. They were always pleased to see a robin, when we had moved house because they knew Santa still knew where to find them.

I have a robin that comes to the garden - and there certainly was a pair around earlier this year that produced little ones. I uncovered an ants nest on the bank/rockery in the back garden and the little one was no more than 6 inches away on a stone and I was feeding him ants eggs. I had the parent birds twittering away from nearby trees calling to each other - it was like 'Where's the little so and so got to?'...and the other one replying 'It's ok..I've found him!. We spent about 10 minutes or so together - magic! Sometimes if you go out very early in the morning when it is still quite dark you will hear a robin singing it's heart out - not many birds sing in the dark but apparently the robin does. We have about a dozen blue tits that feed together every day, sparrows, greenfinches, long tailed tits, blackbirds, a whole flock of starlings that descend every day around 4 o'clock. We have had a bull finch and a jay too. Magpies and pigeons are a pest - we concentrate most of our effort on hanging feeders now so at least the smaller birds get a look in. There is another sort of black and white one which I have yet to identify (rather like a wagtail but without a 'wag' and slightly smaller if anything - anyone got any ideas?) I can't wait for the Mahonia to have berries on - in one feeding frenzy the black birds and starlings eat the lot! Fascinating to watch. Magsxx

Male and female robins look much the same. They are highly territorial so if a pair is together Spring must be approaching and they have amourous intentions. Otherwise, they will battle (to death in necessary) for a patch. I have a tame one in my garden and I supply him/her (I do not like to get too personal) with special robin food. He/she became my special friend when I began to extract very small worms from my compost heap and offer them. I also have a tame female blackbird although she will not take food from my hand (yet) len

We have wonderful robins all year round and have done in all the 27 yrs that I have lived here. They are quite nosey and love it when I am out doing the front garden and don't bat an eyelid while I potter around. My front door faces a large playing field and have quite a range of wildlife which I always put food out for. One sunday Morning last year we even had a badger walking along the path. Have been woken to the vixens calling...sounds like screaming children.Squirels that hop along the garden fence..just to mention a few. But dont seem to see many starlings nowdays Lynn

I have one that literally harasses me when I clean the rabbit out! I have to be sooooo careful where I put stuff cos he flits everywhere - he did a really good impression of a humming bird last week, right by my left ear!! maggie Forgot to mention - I also have a cat - but the robin doesn't care!!

We feed the birds in the garden every day. Its lovely to watch them. We have had sparrows, finches, tits, blackbirds, starlings, a magpie, a few pigeons and a pretty little robin which has been coming into our garden every day for about the last two months. He's quite tame and really cute - We call him Robbie. He is our favourite !!
