saw on g.m.t.v that a women put signs up near her street to guide people to her house to have a look at her christmas lights which she put up to raise money for two charities.the council have turned round and told her that she cannot put them up as she need a license to do so.they have said if she refuses to take them down or puts more up she could be find five thousand pounds.i am undecide on this one as the women has raised eight hundred and fifty punds in a week and on taking the signs down only made fourty seven pounds.but the council are partly right as it is council property nd she neede a licence.what do you thinkx(:

I think that Councils are a law unto themselves.......they allow people like" decaux" to put up signs on the pavement willy nilly but a little A sign is banned..... also have a go at counting the number of posts, planted on the pavement, holding street signs.........you will be amazed..............

You would have thought that in the spirit of Christmas and because it is for charity that they could overlook this- What purpose is it serving to enforce it except making them look mean minded?

In Gloucester they have brought in a bye law to prevent people putting up the 'Happy Birthday' type signs so I suppose this is similar. As you say those are the rules but they could have left it a few days before asking her to take it down. Somebody must have reported it too as the council doesn't usually go prowling around. ann Glos

it's not usually the councilors but some tinpot administrator without an ounce of common sense. My local shopping center (Carlton Lanes Castleford) was also on GMTV this week because someone had decided the CAROL SINGERS were FIRE HAZARD! How nuts can you get! Bob

Mother-in-law (83) received a letter from the Council Tax section of Havering Council to say that as her son had moved back in with her on 15th October, her single occupancy discount was revoked and she owes them £295. Nice Christmas present! In fact, her son has lived with her since his birth in 1965 and he is in receipt of a Disability Living Allowance, which means that he is disregarded for the occupancy rule. We've already gone through this scenario. Why can't they get their records straight? It doesn't bode well for identity cards, I'll probably find that I am 115 years old, three inches high and born in China!

Glitter babynever, mind the the paper adds, on the posts, there are too many sign posts as it is............as I said earlier, just have a casual count up.........signs on the road, symbols painted on the road...red lanes, green lanes....on the pavement on lamp posts, telegraph poles, signs to tell you that the road has been changed, that are about tem years out of date........traffic lights, roundabouts, all sorts of " distraction to motorists........" and they get shirty about something that will only be going for a week or two........

Joanne I too am a council employee. WHOEVER makes these stupid decisions for me should not be employed. They said that the singers were a fire hazard but they have been there for years. They have now reversed the decision!! Bob

It would,nt cost Anything for the council to give a "Special Dispensation" for something like that,It would also create a lot of goodwill. Hal.
