Rosemary, Quite so, I recall a comment some time ago, a roman soldeir had left his "mark" to the effect of " Not again, as soon as something gets setup and running, someone comes along and alters it"

Did you know that graffiti is not new.It was discovered on walls in Pompei. I agree that many modern graffiti artists are very talented but as most of you say if it is done on private property it defaces and is a nuisance to remove. Some councils have provided Graffiti walls for those inspired to use them. I have used examples of the art in English classses as some work is very witty and some astute comment.-Rose

Bloody mindless vandalism, says she, who had the side of the car spray painted on Monday. M.

Some of what I have seen shows a great talent, but 99% of it is mindless scribbling especially on road signs etc,,,,,,,

Both, plus lots of political graffiti is also extremely witty!

I agree with Anne and Keith. There is a place near where I live where freight trains often wait overnight. They are often used as a canvas for the spray paint brigade and I have often thought how much more productive and pleasant it would be if there was encouragement to decorate. Some of the grafitti artists are really quite talented, but it really is vandalism unless they are invited to display their talents. Perhaps, though, they wouldn't want to if it was allowed!

Surely, irrespective of quality, if it is not on the "artist's" own property and it has not been authorised by the land owner then it is vandalism. Keith, Sunny Cairns, Australia

Vandalism (says someone who's had to help clean it off our football stand, time and time again)

I quite like modern grafitti - especially on railways bridges and things like that - brightens it up waiting for the train going into Paddington. So - expression :)
