yes, had sedative injection, didnt feel needle, didnt feel tube going down, came back to reality on way out of theatre. worst part, as somebody else here has said, was being hungry. however after it was all over, they gave me tea and toast. good luck. p.s. my diagnosis was - hiatus hernia - just take tablets for it!!

I've had them from both ends. The colon one, all the way, was a bit disappointing as they said I could watch on the monitor. But they gave me a sedative (without the option) and I went out like a light and woke up when it was all over. No ill effects whatsoever. The one to the stomach was without a sedative and caused no problem or great discomfort. The trick is to trust them and relax.. Got straight up afterwards and went home. I did say that I would be ok if the good-looking nurse would hold my hand - but they just laughed. Len

Thanks again - have shown Phil all the messages and he seems to be a bit more relaxed about it now. Michele - he did make a crack about an 'up' or 'down' one - and the tube involved but I don't think I should repeat it on here! lol Magsxx

Agree completely with Lesley and Diane. I would go for 'needle' every time. Worse part is doing without food prior to it. Silly me slept for ages after, then 'wet' the bed. Nurses changed me and it, then I went back to sleep. Enjoyed toast and cuppie after.

I had a camera "down" in January, was really worried about it. When I got there I opted for the aneasthetic as I was worried about fighting against it. As soon as I was given the injection (which was the most painful thing) I must have conked out. Next thing I remember was waking up on the ward. I didn't have any after effects either. Good luck to your husband he'll be fine. I'm the biggest baby about anything like that!! Diane

Thank you all for taking the time to reply - I am very grateful. I shall show Phil your messages when he gets in from work, hopefully it will stop him worrying quite so much. Thanks again, Magsxx

Hello I worked as a recovery nurse in endoscopy and every patient recovers in their own individual way. Also is your husband having a gastroscopy (down) or colonoscopy (up) both are just 2 proceedures undertaken in the endoscopy department. What ever he is having I wish him well and I'm sure he will be well looked after Michele

Hiya Mags, please give Phil all the best from me. Yes, it's only slightly uncomfortable, not in the least painful. They gave me diazepam to dope me, but it took ages to kick in so that I was wide awake until I got home afterwards .... then was comatose all evening lol (nothing new there then). Love Mandy :)

Wish him all the best from me.Mum used to have them regularly and she never complained about them and she was a real hypondriac, she used to make faces and noises as if in pain when her blood pressure was checked.!!!-Rose

My husband has been told this morning that he is being referred to hospital for an endoscopy. Has anyone had one? - and is it as uncomfortable to undergo as he thinks?
