It seems that fashions come and go, and then often come around again. If that's so, why aren't the fashions of the 1920s, 30s or 1890s etc etc in vogue again?

Each period has its own fashions and although there are borrowed ideas from the past, people generally prefer to look as though they are fashionable, rather than in fancy dress, which is why past fashions are adapted rather than adopted. nell

That's true Sheila. What about gentlemen's attire of that era? Nell, that sounds like a Phd phrase: adapted v adopted. Very clever!

Oooooh John, I really like men's fashion from Victorian era - all those frock coats and tall hats!
