I used to play on the seashore [small beach] of B'ham reservoir. Born near 5 Ways. Father worked at Midland Counties Dairies. My own background was the m/c industry. Bearwood had a clock tower in my time, the trams ran even out to the Lickies, and Lewis's had just had the traffic arch given a rubber surface to quieten it. Snow Hill was full of steam, the Fish Market had a splended all-action striking clock, & my gran took me to the Botanical Gdns which was a huge treat. Went back 5 years ago and recognized nothing, what Goering hadn't bombed the City Fathers had deconstructed in some pogrom or other. Went sliding on the ice at Moorpool owned by Harborne Tenants, Gran dragged me over a rwy footbridge above a cutting to a park in Selly Oak, and was always told by Grandad that the Corporation buses were better than the Midland Red. Have a great Xmas and superb 2005. Bruce Main-Smith +++ |
