It certainly discriminates "on grounds of nationality" as there is no permitted internment of British subjects. They (Brits) must either be charged or allowed to remain free.

We tend to over look One fundermentel problem ALL goverments face when it comes to some thing like this. " Will we still be in Power at the next Elections" They tend to be stuck between a political rock and hard place. Do we intuer every one and suffer the back lash that brings or do we risk our own 9/11 by doing nothing and suffering an even bigger back lash. Yes there trying to save there own asses but at what cost. They tend to think first and work the problems out later. So perhaps we should not be asking is it right or wrong. But what alternatives are there.

I think Len like me has seen decimated bodies from car bombs and innocent people dying on streets , and is talking from his heart , I agree that our judicial system is far to slow to deal with problems like this , and yes it is wrong to keep them detained so long (don't belive I said that) :-) but methinks the blame is with this kin Labour goverment .

I think that the border control is insufficient. They only stop cars at random at Dover and other ports. Sylvia xxx

Granpa You are probably right - but how do you recruit a "benevolent" dictator and how do you get rid if you make a mistake?

Bob

Bob Report 19 Dec 2004 20:24

Len You are assuming here that “they” have got the right people locked up in the first place. There is a long history of innocent people being convicted even after a trial so I have no faith at all that these are any or all the potential bombers. Your question is a cheap shot in a debate like this which I wont dignify with an answer (Or have I just done that?). The point of the debate is that it is wrong to lock anyone up without giving them a trial – that is all. I am also very doubtful about the level of danger that we are in. There was much more chance it seems to me of being blown up by the IRA in the 70s than there is now. It suits the Government and the arms industry to exaggerate the danger. There is danger but not at the level they seem to want us to believe. I can remember the Labour opposition protesting vigorously about detaining Irish terrorists – why are these any different?

I dont suppose you'd mind then Bob if one of these poeple blew themselves up in the middle of Tesco or Asda, whatever you local s' market is, whilst your wife and famuily were doing their shopping along with a lot of other people. And as for loking up a 12 year old boy, has anyone seen the piece on the box where they were training kids younger than that as suicide bombers in palastine. For goodness sake some people want to have a good look at whats going on in the world. Len (been there ,seen it) Ex serviceman

Bob, To be fair I believe the only workable political system is a benevolent Dictatorship. What worries me about today's Society is that I can't see who's pulling the strings. I have seen loads of things happening recently without being able to find anyone who agrees with it. MPs no longer listen to the People. So who ARE they serving?

I feel that it is a retrograde step for civilization to arbitrarily imprison another. EVERYONE has a right to his day in Court to plead his innocence. The alternatives are 1) Swift justice to prove innocence or guilt. or 2) Immediate deportation back to where they came from. Locking someone up because you "have reason to believe" that they are going to commit a Crime? that is sooooo 1984!!!!

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 19 Dec 2004 19:28

Bob, Rightly or Wrongly, that is warfare............these people are suspected of aiding terrorism in one way or another.,,yes they Should be tried, the sooner the better really, and then chucked back to their mother nation.......ASAP.

Were foreigners locked up during the 1st WW and 2nd WW? [Rhetorical question.] What's the difference now?

Bob

Bob Report 19 Dec 2004 19:15

Of course we and the Americans can fly over at 20,000 feet and drop our bombs...

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 18 Dec 2004 22:29

As far as I can recall, there always has been "nationalities", that have 'natural' tendencies, tongue in cheek here, sicilians were the fore runners of the mafia, carribeans were into various exotic 'erbs......I havent yet heard of any white suicide bombers....... and so, races get tainted with assumptions........ and to be honest are possibly not far wrong..........allegedly......

Luciacw

Luciacw Report 18 Dec 2004 22:19

Yes, I'll agree with you on that one. On the website it says: The Law Lords said the rules were incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights as they allowed detentions "in a way that discriminates on the ground of nationality or immigration status". What do you think of this? Lucia

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 18 Dec 2004 22:01

Lucia, if we give these detainees the benefit of a doubt, They May be innocent, BUT "Old Bill, MI5 MI6" dont do this sort of thing without having good grounds for suspicion.........after all is said and done, These murderers dont give their victims a fair trial , do they?

Luciacw

Luciacw Report 18 Dec 2004 21:48

As Sylvia said "better safe than sorry", but I think they should have the right to a fair trial. Lucia

We have created an Island it's called England

syljo

syljo Report 18 Dec 2004 21:13

It seems difficult to deport some as their own country won't take them back. What then? Create an island somewhere? Sylvia xxx
