Roxanne - there are lots of caring people out there - unfortunatley they do not hit the headlines. I feel all pets should be neutered unless they are to have one/two litters and then neutered. These puppy farms should be closed down. Due to my being ill for the past 10 days my husband is just back from the fruit/veg shopping, dropped off the toys, went to the pet shop and stocked up on fat balls, seeds, nuts, sunflower seeds etc. He came home hauled the shopping in and said - the humans won't starve, the dog's cupboard is bulging and the wildlife is fully catered for! Monty's new squeaky is still in the boot of my car as he can smell squeaky toys half a mile away! Christmas morning he will be in his element and I will be saying - yet again - as I do each time he gets a new toy - why did I buy that as our ears will be ringing!!! Bring on the asprin!

Roxanne - I used to be silly enough to think that if people spent hundreds of pounds on a pet - they would take care of them. For over forty years now - our pets have all been rescue - two came from our vet who on each occasion knew we had just had to have one put to sleep and had had these healthy pups given to him to be put down. One pup was 7 weeks and the owners were going on holiday - the vet threw the owner out of his surgery by the scruff of his neck - his staff told us that! Sam had a very happy life with us - spoiled rotten! As a nation we have a terrible track record of cruelty to animals and children. Why? We make a special effort at this time of the year to give as much as we can to charity and we split ours between various childrens/animal charities.

For those who support Rescue Centres and there are many out there. One close to us is Blue Cross and our 12yr old came from there as a 6 wk pup - people donate blankets and food at Christmas but each year when we turn up with a large bag of squeaky toys and balls - the staff are delighted. No one else does this or so we are told. We work on the theory that no pet will go cold or hungry in these centres but the animals do get very bored and become 'stir crazy' in their cages. Toys help to eliminate this. Again does not have to be Christmas to leave toys in. When the animals are rehomed their toy goes with them.

I've just been watching the news on Sky TV (UK). They say about 800 dogs will be dumped after Christmas. It may seem a good idea to get a puppy or kitten as a present for someone but puppies and kittens are hard work !! They need constant care and attention and the novelty soon wears off for some people. It is so sad that so many pets are dumped, unwanted. My little puppy is getting bigger every day,he is now 13 weeks and is into everything. He is hard work but I love him dearly and he will always have a home with me. Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and New Year. Sue x
