When I was a child it was always Father Christmas, so FC gets my vote - justs seems more "child friendly" if you get what I mean! |

Well if we all like Father Chistmas why can I only get "Santa Stop here" signs??!!! Grrr!! Veronica, I am in South Lincs, not North. My ancestors were from the North, though - Tathwell, Irby, Melton Ross - got any CURTIS/BEE/DRURYs in your tree?? |

I'm surprised that without exception you ALL say Father Christmas, and yet in Scotland I don't know anyone who does not say Santa Claus. It has always been Santa Claus since I was little! Christine |

I think because Christmas was "banned" in Scotland and didn't even become a public holiday until the late 1950's we were probably more influenced by the American version of Christmas, as Christmas started to 'catch on' here. I think that must be why it's SANTA CLAUS up here, and FATHER CHRISTMAS down South. Christine |

We always say Father Christmas in our house, although I read somewhere recently that FC was actually a corruption of a pagan character, and he was traditionally dressed in green , to do with tree/nature worship. Santa Claus is an American corruption of St. Niklaus, whose day is still celebrated in Germany on 6th December. Somehow these characters all got mingled to produce Santa/ FC who dresses in red and comes on 24Dec. So I guess either one goes really- just depends on your personal preference. |

Definitely Santa. In fact my little boy looks blank when people ask him if Father Christmas has been. Who's he?? I think Father Christmas sounds so formal. Who calls their dad 'father' nowadays. Maybe it's a generational thing.... Joanne |
