I believe that humans are programmed to look for reasons and explanations. Why we are so programmed I don't know, but we search for meaning in everything, and there doesn't seem to be a meaning in thousands of people randomly being killed by a natural event. But to put this in perspective, not only have people died throughout history because of earthquakes and other natural phenomena, they have also been killed by disease. The flu pandemic of 1918-1919 killed 40 million people - it was like a modern plague. The plagues of the middle ages caused a lot of people to doubt their faith. nell

There's food for thought in my thread "Its all in the mind". If there is a god, an over-riding intelligence, there is no reason to believe that he/she/it would alter the immutable laws of physics and the cosmos in favour of individuals or nations. In a back-handed sort of way, this terrible event has brought peoples of the world together (for an instant) Len

This disaster was caused by Mother Nature, at her most destructive. Such events are often called 'Acts of God', I don't view them as that. We live on a planet that is constantly shifting and changing. I don't believe in God, but I believe in 'Christian' values - I hope these will come into force to help the bereaved, injured, displaced and traumatised.

When something bad happens, why do people always blame God? I take it people believe in 'black and white', 'night and day', 'up and down' ........ so why not 'good and bad'? In my humble opinion, God is the good force ergo there must also be a 'bad' force at work in the world. My faith hasn't been shaken, I'm just praying that God will comfort and strengthen all those hit by this terrible tragedy. Mandy

My answer is the same as Maureen's and is reinforced by events such as those on the 26th. Jean x.

I think I would go along with Emma's reply to a certain extent. WE are responsible for a lot of things but earthquakes I think are more down to forces beyond our control. Unless of course there was any bomb testing going on in the area! As for a God. I wondered that when friends have lost children. Jacky :-)

I often wonder the same thing! i am not religious, someone once said to me that god has taken a back seat as it is WE that have caused these disasters as we abuse mother nature.
