I read pretty similar advice on the Red Cross site when I donated. They use the example that for a food parcel that would cost you 35 quid, they get for less than 10. I've just heard on the news that on top opf everything else, Sri Lanka is now suffering from flash floods, so that will hinder logistics even more.

I saw one of the aid agency workers interviewed this morning, one of the things she was adamant about was that clothing was not an appropriate solution at the moment. Too much of a logistical problem to get that sort of aid to the people, she said that money was a better form of aid in that in would enable aid workers to purchase what was required more locally and also stimulate the economy. The message was if you have surplus clothes go to a boot sale tomorrow, sell them and donate the money.

I know there were some of you desperate to help - on teletext Oxfam are pleading for 10,000 volunteers around the country to man the shops. They are inundated with clothing for the disaster area and say they may have to close a lot of shops without help.
