Karen - we cannot have cats - I am allergic to their fur however all of our dogs have, irrespective of pedigree (mostly mixed) been rescued dogs and this goes back nearly 40 years. We first insured about 25 years ago because of public liability - we had a Newfoundland Cross - weighing over 7 stone - and were concerned that he might, cause an accident (he never did). However, illness/operations are no respector of breed and a moggy requires the same medical attention/care as a pedigree does. Ann

Thank you all - though there were restrictions on over 8yrs neither Tesco nor Sainsbury sites would accept an age over 8 - perhaps I might try the phone. Ann

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 5 Jan 2005 18:27

I've got my two older cats with Tesco's and the two kittens with Direct Line. Both resonable prices - but be sure to read the small print regards excesses and period of cover on each condition!!! My Vet actually informed me that the Tesco policy will only pay out for 12months MAX on a single condition!! My eldest had to have a thyroid gland removed last Feb - first consultation Dec03 - if he has a recurrance now, he will not be covered. And I cant reinsure as he is 15yrs. Anne in Kent

Any companies one can recommend? Insured for number of years with Saga - renewal came this morning over £160 - not a problem in itself although one never likes the increases but the new clauses attached - several extra excesses - and will now only pay £1000 in any one year. Dog is healthy - only one claim, has yearly boosters etc., (ear ripped by rose bush some three years ago) but he is 12yrs old. Tried 3 companies so far on line and will not quote past 8 yrs of age. Have to go and feed him now, make our dinner - will check board later. Thank you. Ann
