Good morning all, does anyone know anything about holding a charity raffle? i want to hold a raffle for the tsunami appeal but dont know if i need a special licence or not? i want to ask local shops ect to donate prizes but not sure if i can do this? Does anyone know? Thankyou Emma x

Not 100% sure but think you can just have an 'on the day' raffle no problem but if you want to sell tickets before hand, - which you probably do to raise more money, - then that sort needs permission, and becomes a draw. My grandson's school has a successful summer draw which local firms/ shops/ businesses are asked to donate to and most do so willingly. Besides being sent a letter of thanks, a list of contributors are posted at the event too. I would think there will be alot of goodwill to donate but you'd better check the legal side with the authorities, as the others here have suggested.

Depends where you are holding the raffle, will depend on whether you need a license or not.... I think the rule is... Public place... license necessary!! If in private place (work, school etc) no license needed!! Plus you should keep a record of the donation and how it was sent to the appeal as then you can prove that they were given the money!
