Create folder on your lap top put everything in it that you want to keep then lap top network cable between lap top and pc then transfer the folder over to new hard drive

Does the lead thing work getting all data from old desktop to new one, or do I save all data to disc and load... :0)

You can network the 2 with a lead, and transfer files between them. Hubbie has done that at home and it worked fine. Good luck Pauline
