I have a Motey Longman b. 1883 Neath. Female. Is it short for something or is this an actaul name do you reckon?

Depends where you've seen it. On a census maybe. Then you can never be sure. But on a certificate - wouldn't that have to be the full. proper name? Must say never come across that one before and can't even think what it might be short for.

On a census and from a relative of the woman who remembers a Motey. Thought it might have been a nickname as I have never heard it before.

Hmmm. Thanks for your help. Still a bit of mystery. As she was from Wales I thought it might have been a welsh name.

could be a shortening of something but can't think what. Not very good on welsh names. Ann Glos
