That sounds really great Brenda,What can you do for Swaffield? I am looking for Jethro Horatio b.1877.He was my grandfather's brother. His son(I think,)Died recently in St Albans. He was born in 1814.He and my mother were cousins born the same year. I cannot get a handle on this branch of the family-any ideas. You will find the only entry for Swaffield for 1877 is jusy Jethro. It does not give Jethro Horatio. This is my stumbling block as most of the eldest sons on both sides of the family were named Jethro.-Rose

Hi Brenda, thanks for your reply. I too have sat with the GRO indexes and trawled through looking for my paternal family surname entries only. 1837 is not so easy and a very expensive way to do it. I think the lesson to be learnt is dont add living relatives, if you decide that you want to, then you should have the permission of the living relatives before adding the information. I would definitely not add juniors/grandchildren. This does not mean that others should just copy your entries, I think that they should do the decent thing and make contact with the person that they are copying from. Pat

If you do a one name study, you do trawl all the way through the GRO indexes, and I have recontructed trees, for my own interest, so that if anyone contacts me, I can give them a gedcom of their own line. I used the original registers, but anyone who was serious about their research could equally use 1837online. If I contact anybody on a surname, I can effectively reconstruct their tree, by looking at the entries that are ticked. This might not work for Smith, but certainly does for the surnames I am interested in. You don't get full details, of course, but if you've already done a bit of research, you can make an educated guess. There are only two living persons on my tree on this site as I wouldn't wish to pass on any additional clues about members of my family. B I once, in a lapse of judgement, sent a single gedcom file to a cousin. That information has spread like dandelion seed. Nothing I can do about it now but, believe me, it won't ever happen again.

I know I am being really dumb, but how would I know if someone was using info on my tree or adding my living relatives to theirs? Can some one explain.I thoght all of the info I put on here was confidential, accessed only by those I gave access to-Rose

Sarah Report 9 Jan 2005 19:56

I recently received some information from a distant relation who has been researching a branch of the family that I haven't looked into. From that info I only used on this site the names of him and his wife and all those deceased relatives. i then discovered these names had also been used by someone else so I thought it only polite to email him and let him know where I had got the names from in case he was concerned (understandably). surely if the people using names the same as you want to build a tree they would get in touch to se if you can help each other? I don't really understand why they are ignoring your emails. seems very suspicious to me and very worrying. Sarah

Hi Brenda, I disagree with what you say in as much that it would take hours and hours, if not days and weeks, of trawling through 1837 to gather as much information to build a family tree. It is an excellent website for veryifying b/m/d information. If I was Mary and Sheila I too would be concerned that my grandchildren's names were copied and used by someone else who will not reply to emails to confirm that they have a connection. Similar happened to my tree, I asked GR for help, I had no reply, so I have now deleted my tree, apart from myself, mother and father. I would advise that Mary and Sheila look more into this, and remove the grandchildren's information from their own trees also.

1837online gives anybody the ability to reconstruct a tree. This information is in the public domain, so there is little you can do about it, save request the poster to delete. B

Oh Mary that is very worrying. If were you I would change some of the details in your tree of all living relatives. I don't know what Genes will do about it, but they do warn people about putting living relatives on here. Good Luck. Pat x

Hi. Im really asking advice here, I have been looking at the latest names added to site,A man who i have never heard of,has added two of my granchildren on there,he has got one of their middle names wrong, but everything else is right.I have emailed him,2/3times and received no reply,is there anything that i can do about this because i really didnt think you should put living people on there. To be honest its giving me cause for concern,as to why he isnt answering me. Regards Mary
