The literal meaning of the word hysteria - that peculiarly female condition beloved of Victorian male doctors came from this: The ancient Greeks believed that women, unlike men, had no internal organs - no heart, no liver, no brain even (MEN: refrain from comment NOW!). All women had was a womb, which moved around the body and caused all sorts of ills. If a woman had a headache, that was due to the womb having moved up to her head. If she had stomachache, that again was due to the womb having gone there, aching legs, again all down to the moving womb. Every condition that a woman might have was attributed to her moving womb. Now, the Greek word for womb is hysteros, and the literal meaning of the word hysteria is womb-iness. There you go girls, its all down to your mobile womb! Lisa

Victorian doctors were batty. They came up with a condition called "spermatorrhoea" which was caused by getting rid of too much sperm by doing that thing that makes you go blind. They thought cholera was caused by bad smells. nell
