There is only a certain amount of money available to spend on booze,so unless the crime rate goes up ,i/e.Mugging etc.no more will be available and there is really no point in it,only of course the ""Ego of the "Minister of Culture" who wants the Country to become an"All Drinking and Gambling" Joint. So much for "Culture". Hal.

I agree with Martin on this one. The problem at the moment is that clubs and pubs that cause problems do not have their leicenses withdrawn. It is ilegal to serve someone you think is drunk but how many prosecutions are there? 24 hour drinking where the local authority allow it and the landlord wants it should be encouraged. Bob

We had all this discussion when the laws changed to allow pubs to stay open all day. Everybody was supposedly going to get drunk from morning to night. Did we really see any difference? No!!! ... and not all the pubs did actually stay open ... it was .. and still is as far as I am aware at the discretion of the landlord. 24 hour opening hours will help to stop the clubbers/hardened drinkers being thrown out at a specific time, and we will all be able to get a can or whatever from the 24 hour supermarket whenever we want. I think it will actually be a benefit and I really don't think people will drink more. Martin

Well done Shelli, I still think the money in their pockets will restrict them, as I said before you can get alcohol 24 hours a day now if you really want to. June xx

Seeing no one has confirmed my vague recollection, i got off my ... well i didn't actually lol and searched... found this..... Licensing laws in England and Wales have changed little since 1915, when they were tightened to stop factory workers turning up drunk and harming the war effort. nice to know i can recall useless facts soemtimes LOL

I'm not against the idea. When I lived in Germany, 11 o'clock was sometimes the time we were arriving there, not leaving. If the hours of drinking were unlimited then I feel that there would be less desire to drink a large quantity of alcohol in a confined period of time, and also everyone wouldn't be leaving the pub or wherever at the same time.

They should shut the damn things altogether and if anyone needs a drink they can buy it from the Offy and drink it at home.

It would be a great idea if the country was full of sensible drinkers. But I think we all know that it's not. I'm not saying that adults don't cause trouble when they've had a few, but the vast majority of drunken trouble causers are between the ages of 18 (and younger!) and 25. I personally would up the legal drinking age to 21. Jeanette x

Didn't they used to be open longer/all day etc before the war?? And they changed it to stop the ammo workers goign to work drunk???? Am very willing to be corrected onthis as it is a hazy thought i had. As to A&E etc not coping is that because, all pubs close at the same time, hence everyone fights/ get hurt/ fall over at the same time??? I personally don't care either way, as am not a drinker

I cant really see the point of it. People have only a set amount of money to spend, it proved this when they last extended the hours, the tills didn't take anymore money. Also the people that want to drink around the clock can manage it now, either in clubs or at home drinking, so what's the point? June xx

Not sure if we have 24hrs a day opening, me not being a drinker, as CB will tell you LOL, but for years we've had them opening at 6 AM. Quite popular with the night shift workers. Don't think I could face a drink at that time in the morning, no matter what shift I'd been on! Christine

I work in a pub and I dont think they should have 24hr trading. Apart from the fact that I dont fancy working through the night I think that 24hr opening would "kill" the trade in the smaller pubs!! Where I work trade has gone quieter since they introduced the 'all day opening'! At one time you had to be in the pub between certain hours and the smaller local pubs were alot busier due to this but since then people have got longer to be in pubs so therefore travel further afield to the larger "theme" pubs.......Also could you imagine going to work/school and having drunks falling out of the pub each morning!!!!!!!

What utter folly this is. For elderly folk to go out after dark any night we run the risk of being mugged. What it will be like when the drunken brigade get let loose I hate to think. Rupert Bear

Not a good idea i dont think and if they are allowed to stay open 24 hours what about the extra money that will be needed to pay staff Margaret

Should we have our pubs open 24 hours a day? Not really sure if it will mean all pubs will be allowed to stay open or not. I cannot make my mind up as to whether it will be a good thing or not. What are your views on the subject? Jenny.
