I'm a bit mixed on this. I speak as an ex drug user way back in the Sixties. Contrary to what people think many drugs are not always addictive. I used to take speed (amphetamines) acid, magic mushrooms and smoke dope. I decided when I was 22 to give it up. Most of my friends did the same. Both my daughters in their teenage years took ecstasy and smoked dope. It didn't stop either of them getting good qualifications, the eldest is now a grammar school teacher and the younger holds down a high-pressure job in IT. I think one of the problems is that some people have an addictive personality, i.e., that is they will misuse whatever substance is available. Those are the ones who end up with a problem. For their sake I think the supply of drugs should be taken out of the hands of drug dealers and made available, at cost by the government in a controlled environment. Users should be monitored to ensure they didn't pass the drugs onto others, for example they should take the drugs under medical supervision. But of course in the real world that is never going to happen. Kids will want to go out and have fun, and if someone offers them something they will take it. Unfortunately I think the genie is out of the bottle!

If you have a bar full of drunk people and a bar full of stoned people the drunks will be more likely to fight. I think alcohol is worse than canabis. I dont think it should be legalised but it can help people in pain.

I too would like to endorse what Martin said. Also I would add that the profits for the pushers are so huge that there is nothing, not even death (many are killed by rivals), that will put them off. Drugs should be available on prescription and in small quantities. Possibly this should apply to cigarettes as well. Surely most drug users would prefer to stay legal so the pushers would go out of business and drug related crime would cease to be a major problem.
