Just looked at Greenwich reg districts on genuki..... Greenwich Created 1st July 1837. In Kent and Surrey until 1889. Sub-districts : Deptford Central; Deptford East; Deptford North; Deptford South; Greenwich East; Greenwich West; St. Nicholas Deptford; St. Paul Deptford; Woolwich Dockyard; Woolwich Arsenal. GRO volumes : V (1837-51); 1d (1852-1930). Deptford St. Nicholas, Deptford St. Paul, Greenwich, Hatcham, Woolwich (1837-68) Registers now divided between Greenwich and Lewisham districts. SO Greenwich was in Surrey until 1889. whereas ST George in the East wasn't St. George in the East Created 1st July 1837. Abolished 1st January 1926 (incorporated into Stepney district). In Middlesex until 1889. Sub-districts : St. George North; St. George and St. John; St. John; St. Mary; St. Paul. GRO volumes : II (1837-51); 1c (1852-1925). St. George in the East. Registers now in Tower Hamlets district. Shelli

Right..... the question was which is nearer to Mitcham Greenwich Surrey OR St george in the east Surrey Well as St Geo in the east has never been in surrey, it has to be the greenwich one. Until 1930 Mitcham came under Croydon reg district. Croydon Created 1st July 1837. Sub-districts : Croydon; Mitcham GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 2a (1852-1930). Addington, Beddington, Coulsdon, Croydon, Merton, Mitcham, Morden, Penge, Sanderstead, Wallington, Woodmansterne. Aileen is right most people refer to it as Surrey, but then others will refer to it as South London. I'm about 20 mins or so from Mitcham and i sometimes say Surrey and sometimes say South London. I say South London as most people know where i mean then!!! St George is the wrong side of the River

Hi, Mitcham is under London Borough of Merton next door to LB of Sutton and is a CR4 postcode. People tend to say its in Surrey rather than London. Greenwich is in SE10 which is right up on The Thames and a long way thru the traffic. Have heard of St George but never been there. Believe it is again up on The Thames area somewhere but not sure where. Aileen from Surrey with the fringe on top.

Shelli, someone looked it up for me on Ancestry so i'm only going by what i've been told. the nearest one in dates would be St George but i was just wondering incase it wasn't the right one----does that male sense???

Well i wouldn't walk from Greenwich to Mitcham!!!!! Greenwich is up by the river, and St georges in the east is on the other side of the Thames . The Surrey you mention is vague???? but I would go for Surrey. When you say Surrey, is it a BMD look up if so does it say Surrey mid eastern or something similar???
