Am going to Strines on Friday to where some of my ancestors are from. What can I do whilst I'm there apart see the farmhouse they owned? Want to take advantage of being there but not sure what to do... love becx |

Well, it might sound obvious but remember to take a camera. Depends on what you know already and what you don't know. For example, are they buried there? |

Take photos of the church as they were probably christened, married and buried there. And have a tramp round the churchyard to see if you can find any headstones with family names on. Take a notebook to jot down any inscriptions. jeanette x |

Do you need any information from the local records office? Remember to find out if you need to book a machine in advance. Chrissie x |

Yes, a few drinks at the pub and the idea of traipsing round a graveyard on a cold, January afternoon won't seem too enticing, lol. |

A lot of mine came from Clewer in Berkshire. It must be a small place as I have never seen it on a map. About fifteen years ago I went to where I thought it would be and could'nt find it. I started asking the locals and one guy said it had been raised to the ground and was now under the M4. I was looking at a Berkshire map book the other day.......and it was there. This person lied to me all thosse years ago. One day I shall go again. Jo. |

Local newspapers of the time may have articles on some of them. Were they in business, trade directories of the time are halpful. We search graveyards, photograph grave stones and tombs.Even the churches are of interest as this is where they were christened, married and had their funeral services.Old cottage hospitals often have records of accident victims. One of my ancestors was killed by a run away cart. She lingered for three days before dying of her wound in the local cottage hospital. Local Museims often have family recor rooms. As they are for local interest there is often something here which does not get to the big Record Offices. I have photographed my 4x Gt Gf shop where he ran his tailoring business and the house where he died of stomach cancer, poor man. I have seen an account book kept in the 1750 by a gt gt etc Uncle as he was parish clerk. The book was never sent to the RO in Taunton as a child of the family drew in the back of it. Good Luck I hope you find plenty-Rose |
