Ah, but if the Establishment confirmed that James Maybrick actually was Jack the Ripper, the whole horror movie profit game would go down the pan. Much more fun and lucrative to keep us all guessing, lol! Philip

Geoff - you got me going! He was staying at the Adelphi Hotel inLiverpool - only for the wealthy especially in those days. He appears to have married later in the year reg. Sept 1881. I google his name and there is a lot there - when I have time must refresh my memory and read it. Looks interesting. Ann

I looked up James Maybrick on the 1881 census - he was staying at a hotel full of foreigners in Liverpool.

The theory on Maybrick came to light some years ago when a diary was discovered in a house in Liverpool in which James Maybrick had lived. I think it was BBC who did the documentary on it. It was very interesting. Ann

From the latest published research on Jack the Ripper it has now been proved that he was in fact James Maybrick. He fled to America where he committed further crimes of a similar nature. The identity of Jack the Ripper had been known by the Establishment for years, but for some unknown and seemingly stupid reason it eas never made oublic.Quite why the members of the public were prevented from knowing the identity of the Ripper is a mystery.

I like it John - made me laugh - after I began researching our family history I had a cousin who would always ring and ask for 'Sherlock' - rarely called me Ann after that! After all research is detection when you think about it. Ann

Jack the Ripper's "activities" were just a couple of months before that date.

Hi Phillip, Having been interested in Jack the Ripper for many a long year - yes there has always been the theory that it was a Royal son popping up constantly. Ann

Hello Ann, I thought that one of the Clarence family was reputed to have been Jack the Ripper, although of course it can never be proved! Philip

Homo Sapiens is very much the same now as 5000 years ago, we do not change our ways much. The establishment will always look after it's own. From the tribal chief to the president. After all I suppose we all look after our own families.

This is the title of an article in The Sunday Times Magazine on 16 Jan. "19 Cleveland St. London W1 in 1889 - Scotland Yard confirmed that 'a number of men of superior being and apparently good position' frequented the house which offered, at four shillings a time, the services of rough labourers through to youthful telegraph boys who worked at the nearby Central Post Office. Regulars were said to include Lord Arthur Somerset, the Earl of Euston and Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. After being tipped off the brothel's owner, Charles Hammond, fled to America using funds supplied by Lord Arthur Somerset's solicitor, Arthur Newton. (Somerset also fled - to Vienna.) As the scandal erupted, the Earl of Euston successfully sued the editor of The North London Press for defamation. Prince Albert Victor was dispatched to India on a tour of duty. Newton, however, was tried for perverting the course of justice, receiving a suspiciously lenient sentence, as did the brothel staff. Some claimed this was the result of an intervention by the prime minister, Lord Salisbury. The Establishment has always looked after its own." The article caught my eye - even Queen Victoria had her family worries! Is this why the title of Duke of Clarence has not been used since - or has it? Ann
