Ancestry.com not just money but monopoly

Hi Sandra, Valerie has already told you that there are a number [a lot] of genealogy sites that are part of the MYFAMILY merger. You might feel you get value for money as you find information. The wider issue is that Ancestry.com seem to be buying all the genealogy sites in the world. I have happily accessed sites and got free information, to return a few weeks/months later to find either a problem with the site and it be suggested that I try Ancestry.com or it seems quite clear that Ancestry owns this site [time to pay]. I am very concerned that nobody seems to be noticing this monopoly taking place. Genes Reunited how long will you hold out? WHY SHOULD WE PAY FOR INFORMATION THAT IS FREELY AVAILABLE IF YOU HAVE LOCAL ACCESS. Lots of sites [like this] start on free basis, Oh dear! will FamilySearch.org hold out. If not it will be the downward spiral to exhorbitant costs we cannot afford. Is there anything we all can do on a personal basis to prevent a monopoly taking place?

I would hope that Genes R stays as it is with the original owners who first thought of the idea. But it must have the potential to be a huge money spinner. lets hope that Ancestry doesn't get its hands on free BMD Ann Glos

Well, funny thing but there are a few people having problems with their clocks tonight, some of them are showing american dates. Do you think Genes have been bought out already?

Don't think ancestry(.)com would buy freebmd, it has trustees - on the freebmd site it says at the end: FreeBMD is kindly sponsored by RootsWeb, Ancestry.com and The Bunker. Joy
