Paul, Of course it matters. Would you accept an addition to your family tree if you knew they had got it wrong? If you ask for tea would you accept coffee? Why should we not strive to be correct?

As someone who's known as being a bit pedantic myself... I do think this is a case of mountain/molehill. At the end of the day, does it really matter ?

Marion, I see standards dropping all around me, and I know that English is a fluid language, so the inborn Teacher in me tries to show Correctness. That is not Political. If someone asks for help finding their mobile phone and then describes the TV Remote as the missing object then you would think them odd to say the least. It really does make my teeth itch when a member who is (presumably) serious about this work doesn't know the difference between a Cousin and an Ancestor.

Grampa Jim Nothing wrong with a bit of pedantry! nell

The reason I put this thread is because I have occasionally seen people asking for help in tracing Ancestors. And then gone on about how Great Uncle Harry's family moved away and they've lost touch with his children. Don't want to be pedantic but I can't help it.

Relationships are explained on the LDS Familysearch site - or, at least, they were when I looked at it a few weeks back. CB >|<

Thanks Grampa..... No Paul........." Removed" does NOT mean having been dragged away, kicking and screaming, while enclosed in a straight jacket...........LOL

Jim Can I clarify/query ? The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word ANCESTOR as "Any of the people from whom somebody is descended, especially those more remote than his grandparents;forefather" So it's not just one's parents (as your message implies), but the whole "birth line" for want of a better words. OOPS I THINK I MISREAD YOUR MESSAGE, DIDN'T SEE THE BIT ABOUT GRANDFATHER ETC, SORRY !!!! Regards Paul

ANCESTORS have the words Mother or Father. E.g. Grandfather. 7ggmother. DESCENDANTS are Children or grandchildren etc. All the rest are RELATIVES. Please don't confuse a Cousin twice removed with an ancestor. It just aint so!.

Over the past few months several people have indicated that they are not experienced at Genealogy, so here is some clarification.
