Do our young children get confused with these modern spellings? Gudnite - goodnight There are too many advertisements these days with this sort of spelling. It is no wonder that children cannot spell. My sympathy goes out to the children, not the instigators of these modern advertisements. Sylvia xxx

Despite all the bad spellings in advertisments, my 9 year old spells very well. He knows what is the right way & the silly way to spell. And uses the former. Kids take no notice of faddy ad spellings while learning & only tend to use them when they get older and use texting and messenger. Elaine x

I think you're right Elaine. My son is 16 - very much in the texting age group! - yet none of the teachers remarked on any bad spellings in his recent GCSE mocks. As long as they realise that the English language and 'text speak' are two totally different things! Mandy :)

I think they just learn both ways - like learning 2 languages. My diary has a page devoted to text language! Jack x

Hi Sylvia I think Elaine is probably right. My daughter has a spelling age of a 12 year old and is only 8. She knows the difference between the wrong and right way to spell things. And if she isn't sure she always asks. Jeanette x

Jeanette My son also had a reading age of a 12--3/4 year old at age 8. I also have a daft hubby who will scratch his foot & say "my nose itches". Just for a laugh. Always told him that he would ruin the kids speech ect & confuse them, but it never did! (He still mucks about & the kids just roll their eyes to the heavens lol) Elaine x
