Margaret My thyroid problem was diagnosed about six years ago and in my case it's controlled by medication. No-one has ever mentioned surgery to me. Joan x

Normally it is controlled by tablets but in some rare cases like mine was than an operation is normally recommended, hopefully not for you though. Dawn

Margaret, if you have lost weight, are over heating and heart hammering these are signs of over active. If you have put weight on , feel cold and tired all the time then it is under active Tricia

Mine was starting to swell up for some reason and it made my neck look huge, the doctors didn't really understand why it happened so they advised me to have it taken out, we have been trying to start a family for the last 2 years and the doctors said that could of been the reason why we haven't conceived yet, hopefully know it's gone there's a chance. Mine is underactive. On Thyroxine for life now. Downside - dose not quite right and you put on weight - ditto very dry skin - moody Upside - Exemption ticket from prescription charges for the rest of forever. Real chore having to re-order every month , something you'll need for rest of life and can only have 30days at atime. Doh! Jess x
