I got a good deal from Kwik-Fit + 10% off Tyres etc. Helped a lot when I needed a new piece of exhaust and a Catalytic Converter this year. Jim

... and because car insurance is only as good as the service the company gives after a crash !!! ... I would NOT recommend SAGA. Mine was a no fault claim - maybe it was a one off, but the "service" from them was atrocious, and I even had to go to the police station myself because they wouldn't send for the police report even though they had said they would!! I have been with Direct Line for several years also insure the house with them. Finally got hubby to change from Norwich Union and they knocked £120 pounds off for the same cover. Direct line also knocked £50 off my car insurance when I got married, nothing had changed on the policy hubby was and still is the only other named driver. Never had any problems when I had to make a claim, even though they were only 3 months apart. Fortunately the second accident wasn't my fault. Ros

I'd just like to add to Bob's post regarding Third Party insurance. I work for a vehicle breakdown/recovery company and you would be amazed at the number of Third Party drivers. When they are involved in an accident, ALL recovery and storage charges have to be paid by the vehicle owner before the car can be released, even if the accident was not their fault - e.g. rear end shunt. The basic recovery charge from an accident in this area (as laid down by the police) is £90 + vat, more on a motorway. If specialist equipment (winches, cranes etc) is used the costs are more. The storage costs are usually about £12 - £14 per day + vat, and as you can see it doesn't take long for the charges to mount up. You can claim the costs back from the other driver, always providing he/she was insured, but this takes time and the costs are mounting. If you are insured 'Fully comp' the insurance company will arrange for collection and repair, if appropriate, and pay all the charges although you will usually have to pay your excess. Sue xx

Bob Thank you for that piece of imformtion ,couple of points never thought of jacking up the excess, hubby is the main driver of his car i dont drive it too big ,we havent got a garage so we lose out there but it is approved imobilsed, we never ever do 3rd party once bitten twice shy, and i think taxi's would be expencive as hubby does a 40 mile round trip for work. Thanks Margaret

Margaret Offers can vary from day to day so a company that was good last month may not be this month (I won't bore you with the reasons). You get no benefit from being loyal. Change if you can do better elsewhere. There are ways to reduce the premium though: Jack up your excess - You probably wouldn,t make a claim for less than £100 because it would affect your NCB so this should be tha minimum excess. Try online quotes with £200 or even more (Stick the money in a savings account in case you need it and pocket the interest) Check out insurers who specialise in insuring women drivers - you are supposed to be a better risk. Think about security - parking in a garage saves quite a bit and immobilisers help too (make sure they are approved though). Don't be tempted to go for 3rd party. Fully Comp is often no more expensive and if you are the innocent victim (get rear-ended) they will recover all your costs from the other driver. With 3rd party you are on your own. Finally you should add up ALL the costs of owning a car and decide if you couldn't manage without it. Taxis aren't all that expensive. Bob

We found Sainsbury's cheaper this time. We tried SAGA and Kwik Fit plus various others including Tesco. We tend to change companies every 2 - 3 years as that way we get the best quotes. Jacky

Absolutely Joy! And on that basis I would NEVER recommend Churchill! Saga was way too expensive for hubby and me - I'm with Zurich (was Eagle Star) and get a discount cos house insurance is with them too. I intend shopping around this year though - there must be some cheaper out there! Hubby is with Direct Line - they covered his damages claim after his bike accident and couldn't be faulted. Sue xx
