Hi In the event that someone is researching this gentleman here is some information that might be of interest: Joseph Cownley (1723-92) was born in Leominster, Herefordshire. He was working as a magistrate's clerk in Bath, when he was converted by John Wesley in 1743. Cownley entered the itinerancy three years later and from his base at the Orphan House in Newcastle, travelled widely in the north of England and Ireland. Cownley was highly regarded by Wesley who believed him to be one of the best preachers in England. Cownley was ordained for the work in Scotland in 1788. After Wesley's death, he supported those Methodists who wished to be administered the sacraments by their own preachers.
